Sprintec is a brand name for a combination hormonal birth control pill. It contains two active ingredients: ethinyl estradiol, which is a synthetic form of estrogen, and norgestimate, which is a synthetic form of progestin. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to impede sperm movement, and altering the uterine lining to make it less receptive to implantation.
Sprintec is typically taken once a day, at the same time each day, for 21 consecutive days, followed by 7 days of placebo pills (or no pills at all), during which a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period) usually occurs.
Sprintec can also help regulate periods, treat acne and decrease the risk of ovarian cysts.
